چکیده

Divided attention is investigated in concurrent tasks of letter recognition and second-order motion detection. I developed a quantitative method, Structure-Attention Mapping (SAM), to explain my data and to relate concurrent psychophysical experiments to the architecture of human visual cortex. A dual task paradigm, in which the interference between two tasks indicated the nature of processing involved was used. Subjects performed concurrent tasks of letter recognition and motion detection of second-order motion stimuli under diierent attentional instructions. Based on the task performances, the subjects fell into two very distinct groups. This suggested that both second-order and third-order motion processes were activated, but to signiicantly diierent degrees in the two groups. Third-order motion detection interfered with letter-recognition, while second-order motion detection did not. Additional experiments showed that two concurrent second-order motion tasks interfered with each other as did two third-order motion tasks. The diierence in interference patterns of the two motion processes suggests that second-order motion may be computed entirely in the dorsal stream (spatial processing) while third-order motion consists of two computational processes , one of which occurs in the ventral stream (pattern recognition), and shares computational resources with the letter-recognition task.

Effects of valence and divided attention on cognitive reappraisal processes.

Numerous studies have investigated the neural substrates supporting cognitive reappraisal, identifying the importance of cognitive control processes implemented by prefrontal cortex (PFC). This study examined how valence and attention affect the processes used for cognitive reappraisal by asking participants to passively view or to cognitively reappraise positive and negative images with full o...

Evidence for unlimited capacity processing of simple features in visual cortex

Performance in many visual tasks is impaired when observers attempt to divide spatial attention across multiple visual field locations. Correspondingly, neuronal response magnitudes in visual cortex are often reduced during divided compared with focused spatial attention. This suggests that early visual cortex is the site of capacity limits, where finite processing resources must be divided amo...

Brain activity during divided and selective attention to auditory and visual sentence comprehension tasks

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we measured brain activity of human participants while they performed a sentence congruence judgment task in either the visual or auditory modality separately, or in both modalities simultaneously. Significant performance decrements were observed when attention was divided between the two modalities compared with when one modality was selectiv...

Brain regions associated with successful and unsuccessful retrieval of verbal episodic memory as revealed by divided attention.

Which brain regions are implicated when words are retrieved under divided attention, and what does this tell us about attentional and memory processes needed for retrieval? To address these questions we used fMRI to examine brain regions associated with auditory recognition performed under full and divided attention (DA). We asked young adults to encode words presented auditorily under full att...

The effect of divided attention on encoding and retrieval in episodic memory revealed by positron emission tomography.

The effects of divided attention (DA) on episodic memory encoding and retrieval were investigated in 12 normal young subjects by positron emission tomography (PET). Cerebral blood flow was measured while subjects were concurrently performing a memory task (encoding and retrieval of visually presented word pairs) and an auditory tone-discrimination task. The PET data were analyzed using multivar...
